Court orders Onyeka Onwenu to pay N5m to Tony Okoroji for defamation

The legal battle between Onyeka Owenu and Tony Okoroji, CEO of COSON Nigeria may have reached an end and seems to have favoured Mr Tony as the court has ordered Onyeka Onwenu to pay him N5m and tendere a public apology to be published on Vanguard Newspaper  for defamation of character.

Chief Tony Okoroji, former President of PMAN and Chairman, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON)and Onyeka has been at war as far back as 2011 when Okoroji went to court following the publication of an article in the Vanguard newspaper edition of October 14, 2011 which he considered a deliberate attempt to malign or defame him.

Reacting to the judgment, a jubilant Okoroji who was in court said, ‘Once again, as has happened several times before, the courts have come to my rescue proving that despite what may be said to the contrary, you can obtain justice in Nigeria.

'This has taken close to four years of going in and out of court but at the end of the day, I must thank Honourable Justice Akinkugbe who the Almighty has again used to do justice for her professionalism. I must also thank my lawyer, Mr. Justin Ige for his commitment and thoroughness’.

He continues to say, ‘I have committed much of my life to fighting for the welfare of every musician in Nigeria and protecting the interest of all including Ms. Onyeka Onwenu. In the battle, I have spared myself no inconvenience or discomfort and countless times, I have had to risk my life, my reputation and the welfare of my family.

‘Working with my colleagues at COSON, we have made available to musicians across Nigeria hundreds of millions of naira as we set out with the building of the most professional, transparent and accountable organization in the history of the creative industries in Nigeria, something that was considered impossible just a few years ago.

‘I wish I never had to take Ms. Onwenu to court. I consider every Nigerian musician including Onyeka a member of my extended family. Onyeka however left me with little choice. I went to court in self defence. Till today, I do not know what wrong I did to Onyeka Onwenu. As someone I considered a close colleague and friend, I was shocked at the level of hatred she had generated within herself to justify her all-consuming campaign of lies without foundation to destroy the one thing she knows that I cherish most; my integrity.

Gay men attacked and beaten over this photo posted by U.S. embassy

Gay men living in the Ivory Coast were forced to flee their homes after the U.S. embassy posted a photo on its website identifying the men as members of the LGBT community.

The photo shows a group of six men signing a condolence book for victims of the Orlando gay bar massacre last month.

Four of the six men in the photo say they were forced to flee their homes in fear for their lives after family and friends discovered they were gay.

Two of the men said they were punched and kicked by an angry mob who recognized their faces from the photo.

The men told the Associated Press the mob attacked them while “shouting anti-gay slurs.”

They men said they did not authorize the U.S. embassy to identify them as members of the gay community in the photo.

The photo is still available — without the faces obscured — on the embassy website.

Embassy press officer Elizabeth Ategou said the embassy received no requests to take the photo down.

Ategou told the AP the embassy “deeply regrets that any individuals were attacked based on any kind of orientation they might have.”

She said the embassy was in contact with the men and urged them to report the attacks to police.

The U.S. Embassy in Abidjan provided outreach to the LGBT community in 2011 after U.S. President Obama issued a directive to “all agencies engaged abroad” to promote homosexuality and protect the “human rights of sexual minorities.”

Photos from memorial vigil held in honour of late Nigerian rep at Mandela Washington Fellowship

A memorial vigil was held at the United Methodist Church US yesterday in honor of 24-year-old John Paul Ojaojogwu Usman, one of the 100 Nigerians selected for the entrepreneurship and leadership training in the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship in US who died on Saturday June 25th while hiking near the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

 According to the Daily Trust,

A colleague of the late Usman from South Africa, Nzuzi narrated what happened: “We went on a hiking trip. I was walking ahead with four other fellows, including John Paul and one of our coordinators. When we reached the waterfall where some decided to swim, John Paul kept insisting I go into the water and I didn’t, because it was too cold. He decided to join the fellows who were right under the water and the next thing that happened was that he slipped into the water and started drowning. Another fellow tried to save him but they both disappeared for a while. We were all freaked out and then the one fellow (trying to rescue the deceased) came back up but JP remained unseen. We started screaming for help, and people jumped in to look for him. They then recovered his body.”
