"Real Reasons I Conceded to Buhari" — Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has spoken of the tensed moment he faced on March 28, 2015 ahead of his decision to concede victory to President Muhammadu Buhari after that year’s presidential election.

He also narrated why he relinquished power to Buhari, saying he did not want Nigeria to slide into a theatre of war, with his fellow county men and woman dying, and many more pouring into other nations in Africa and beyond, as refugees. GEJ said:
“I never knew that the human brain had the capacity for such enhanced rapid thinking. One hundred and one things were going through my mind every second. My country was
at the verge of collapse. The tension in the land was abysmally high and palpable, in the months leading to the election. The country became more polarised more than ever before, such that the gap between the North and the South and between Christians and Muslims became quite pronounced.
In fact, it became so disturbing that some interest groups in the United States began to predict indeed, many Nigerians did buy into this doomsday prophesy as they began to brace themselves for the worst.
As the President, I reminded myself that the Government I led had invested so much effort into building our country. I worked hard with my top officials to encourage Nigerians and non-Nigerians to invest in our country to be able to provide jobs and improve the lives of our people.
We worked hard to grow our economy and to improve and bring Nigeria up as the biggest economy in Africa, with a GDP of about half a trillion dollars.
As the President, I served out my first term but, I lost the bid to be re-elected. I am encouraged by the fact that many of you here appreciated my decision not to reject or contest my loss at the polls, not even in the courts as many people had expected.
It was not an easy decision to take. This is because the allure of power and the worries about what would become of you after leaving office constitute an irresistible force. It has an attraction so controlling and powerful that it takes a man who has the fear of God and who loves his people and nation to relinquish power so easily in Africa.
“Should I then, for the love of power, watch Nigeria slide into a theatre of war, with my fellow country men and women dying, and many more pouring into other nations in Africa and beyond, as refugees?
Should I hang on to power and tussle with my challengers, while the investments of hard working citizens of the world go down the drain? I then said to myself, NO!
“I promised my God that I will not let that fate befall Nigeria under my watch, hence the historic telephone call I put through to congratulate my challenger even when the results were still being tallied.
I believe that for a country to be great, both the leaders and the led must be prepared to make sacrifices. This is why, everywhere I go, I always advise that the new generation of African leaders must think differently.
We can no longer afford to wilfully sacrifice the blood of our citizens on the altar of dangerous partisan politics. It is not worth it.

Palace Expels Queen Mother over Alleged Adultery in Delta State

An atmosphere of disbelief and dumbness has enveloped the Idumuje-Ugboko community in Aniocha North local government area, Delta State, following the alleged ejection of the Queen Mother, Her Royal Majesty (HRH), Okwukwe Nwoko, from the palace, over allegation of infidelity, since the past two years.

Okwukwe accused the crown prince and his loyalists of sending her out of the palace so the former could achieve his desire of succeeding the 90-year old monarch who she said is now in miserable condition due to lack of care,

She also threatened court action to reclaim her position in the palace.

The monarch, Obi Agbogidi Nwoko III, reportedly married four wives but divorced two while one is
dead, leaving Okwukwe as the only recognised wife staying with him before the development.

Okwukwe, 37, in an interview with newsmen said she was unjustly accused of infidelity and sent out of the palace with seven-month-old pregnancy belonging to the monarch.

She said trouble started after a failed plan to reconcile one of the Obi’s former wives with the palace and some persons vowed that no wife of the Obi would remain in the palace since the move failed.

The queen mother claimed that when she was accused of infidelity, she agreed to a DNA test or be allowed to take the traditional oath to prove her innocence.

She added that her accusers, working on speculations, refused and drove her out despite the unproven case of infidelity.

Okwukwe claimed that while the matter was being addressed, she was stopped from entering the palace.

According to her, she lived peacefully with the monarch before the incident. She stated that the pregnancy she was accused of getting through infidelity produced a baby who is now about three years old.

She also said the baby had neither been seen nor touched by her father since her birth.

Okwukwe appealed to the Obi-in-Council, opinion leaders and the royal family to intervene in the matter, adding that she “wants to go back to the palace and take care” of her husband.

When contacted, the Iyase of Idumuje-Ugboko, Chief Chris Ogwu, said the Obi-in-Council had yet to address the issue, noting that the traditional ruler was not happy with the expulsion of his wife from the palace.

However, a member of the royal family who identified himself as Prince Obi Nwoko, who spoke to Journalists, insisted that Okwukwe was found to be pregnant outside wedlock and was ejected by the royal family according to tradition.

He alleged that besides sighting her severally in an uncompromised position, the baby in question was not a semblance of the Nwokos.

My Beef with Princess – Lolo 1

Media personality and comedienne, Omotunde David, popularly known as Lolo 1 of Wazobia FM, speaks about her failed marriage and recent spat with colleague, Princess in a new interview with Punch Spice.

Excerpts:

  • How have you been able to shield your private life from prying fans?

I am a proud mother of four children and I have the right to keep them away from prying fans. If you
know me very well, you would know that they are my all and an integral part of my life. Occasionally, I post their pictures on social media, but that’s not what’s key for me.

  • Unconfirmed reports suggest that your marriage has broken up.

My husband is a very private man and I wouldn’t want to put him out there. It’s not something he appreciates or cares about. We’re presently going through a divorce, but we have mutual respect for each other. We will do all we can to protect and nurture our lovely kids. We are also actively involved in the lives of our children.

  • You recently called out your fellow comedian, Princess, on Twitter. What were you particularly unhappy about?

Sometimes, women have issues. At an event which held this month, she caused me to feel awkward. I felt slighted because her action was unnecessary. I had to give vent to my anger because I am human. Some of our colleagues waded into the matter and I believe that our differences will be sorted out. We’re human beings and we are bound to hurt each other at some point. But, we have to let it go and keep the ball rolling.

  • Have you ever committed a fashion blunder?

I once missed the memo to an event, so I arrived at the venue looking overdressed. For an informal event, I was decked in a super show-stopping dress. I felt uncomfortable and I have since learnt to always consider the nature of an event before I come up with a choice of attire.

Photo: Young Boy Ritualists in Kaduna Removed Eyes Begs to See his Mother & Grandmother

Residents of Bula area of Jushi, Zaria, are yet to recover from shock, after the brutal removal of a young boy’s eyes in the neighbourhood.

When Malama Hadiza Usman said goodbye to her three-year-old grandchild, Abubakar Usman, on his way to evening Islamiyya class, it never occurred to her that danger lurked nearby. An hour later, she received shocking news.

In tears, Malama Hadiza told Daily Trust that she would never forget the incident for the rest of her life.
“I’d given him N5 to buy sweets on his way, on Sunday, January 24. He left the house
with his brother Umar, but on their way they were intercepted by yet-to-be identified men who took him to an uncompleted building and gouged his eyes out.”
According to Malama Hadiza, when the news of broke, she rushed to the scene, where her grandson lay, writhing bloodied. She said there were syringes and needles, as well as some substances believed to have been used by the suspected ritualists in removing the eyes of young Abubakar.

Malama Hadiza’s screams drew a crowd to the scene, and the ward head of the area was invited. He, in return, informed the police and the district head. Usman was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in Wusasa, Zaria, as nurses are presently on strike at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH).

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Gilbert, said on receiving the victim, they mobilised to give the boy the necessary assistance he required. However, the father of the boy, Usman Isa, said on the intervention of the emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, the boy was taken to a private eye hospital in Kaduna. He said:
“The Kaduna hospital has referred us back to ABUTH. Doctors have conducted surgery yesterday. From what they told us, the perpetrators have removed everything that has to do with the eyes, which would make fixing them difficult. However, doctors said that they would review the operation to see the outcome, hoping they can fix artificial ones.”
Isa, in tears, told Daily Trust that the doctors said the artificial eyes would be fixed just to fill the holes, but not for the young boy to see.
“Except if Allah performs a miracle,” he sobbed.
Another account of the incident revealed that the suspected ritualist approached little Abubakar pretending he was an uncle.
“The other children with the victim confirmed to us that the young man said he was a brother to Abubakar’s mother and would soon bring him  back,” a resident said.
At the hospital, little Abubakar was telling those around him to open his eyes to enable him see his mother and grandmother.
“Open my eyes, I want to see Mama. Mama, where are you? Where’s Grandma?” he kept wailing.
Abubakar’s mother, said to be in her parents’ home, is so shocked that she hasn’t been able to set her eyes on her son.

Police Area Commander in charge of Zaria, Muhammad D. Shehu, said they are trailing the perpetrators.

Residents of Bula area have demolished the uncompleted building where the crime was committed, vowing to monitor movement around such places.
